How Outdoor Clotheslines Can Reduce Electricity Use

Energy Star, a United States government program concerned with energy efficiency in consumer products, does not rate clothes dryers.

They are the biggest user of electricity in the home. With current targets being set out on carbon use, governments in developed countries are researching just how wasteful householders are and trying to teach people to cut back on unnecessary electricity use.

With everyone using outdoor clotheslines instead of electric driers a countries energy use can be dramatically cut.

The problem with using electricity is that to generate it we need to use natural resources; oil, gas and coal are traditionally used, but burning these resources creates carbon dioxide and other harmful gases, which create the hole in the ozone layer, which creates global warming. This has the potential to destroy our planet.

Governments are beginning to use natural resources they don't need to burn, such as wind and water power. But it isn't possible to use these sources everywhere and where it is progress is slow. So it is down to those of us who use this electricity to cut back, and one of the easiest and most immediately effective ways to do this is by using an outdoor clothesline to dry washing.

Here are some other great and easy ways to reduce energy use in the home.

1. Turn your heating and hot water down. Reducing your room temperature by just 1°C could cut your energy use by up to 10 percent.

2. Close your curtains in the evening to stop heat escaping through the windows.

3. Always turn off the lights when you leave a room.

4. Don't leave appliances on standby.

5. If you're not filling up the washing machine or dishwasher, use the half-load or economy programme.

6. Only boil as much water as you need (but remember to cover the elements if you're using an electric kettle).

7. A dripping hot water tap wastes energy and in one week wastes enough hot water to fill half a bath, so fix leaking taps and make sure they're fully turned off!

8. Use energy saving light bulbs as they last up to 10 times longer than ordinary light bulbs.

Hanging clothes on an outdoor clothesline and enjoying the sunshine and fresh outdoor breeze is much more satisfying than crouching in a stuffy room, loading clothes into a noisy machine that will damage fabric. This will benefit you in more ways than one.

All these are simple tips that will save energy in the home and therefore save energy being used throughout the country.

They cost nothing but will save lots, both financially and ethically.
