I married the man of my dreams at the age of 22 and remain happily married today, 18 years later. What my husband and I learned along the way was that we wished someone would have guided us from the very beginning of our married life together was the holidays.
At the time of getting married I had grand visions of marital bliss where we would always see eye-to-eye. Yeah right. How can anyone see eye-to-eye at all times, let alone a man and a woman. Men and women always seem to have very different thoughts from the simplest tasks of taking out the garbage, folding laundry, cooking meals, etc. So how are they supposed to agree who they spend the holidays with?

We learned the hard way that you cannot please everyone on both sides of the families with any decision that you make, especially concerning the holidays. Whether it be Christmas, Hanukkah, Thanksgiving, Easter, Passover, overlapping birthdays, etc. There will always be someone that feels slighted.
So why not make it easier on yourselves and set an alternating schedule? One year you spend such and such holiday with your family and the next year it will be with his family. Write it down each year so that you don't have to rack your brains to remember what you did the previous year. This way when the holiday approaches you can let the respective families know quickly, who you will be spending the day with. For the family that you will not be spending the day with you can spend an alternate date with them either before or after the holiday.
This should help to lift the stress somewhat of the holidays.
Most of all enjoy your married life together. There will be ups and downs, but hopefully the ups outweigh the downs!
