. Research available accessories and styles. Think about how you want to function when working in your laundry room.

Every laundry area is different, so the best use of the space would probably involve custom cabinetry. However, there are many stock options which can be helpful, if not optimal.

Comfortable, cozy, and inviting. These words are often used to describe other rooms in a home, but never a laundry room. Considering the amount of time you spend there, shouldn't it be comfortable as well as utilitarian.

The room should be cheery and pleasant, and capable of hiding a massive amount of built-in storage as well as several organizational features within the cabinets. Laundry room cabinets can be designed to work in just about every situation.

The wall hung cabinets can have solid doors, but glass doors would give a more open feeling. Frosted glass can obscure the contents if you prefer. Accessories can be built into the cabinetry - like a fold-down ironing board for instance. Accessories are also available which offer fold-out ironing boards that come from a drawer.

There should be space for a hamper. You can have it built-in, or simply leave a cavity for your bathroom hamper to fit into. Create enough of a counter top to provide an ample surface for folding clothes. Can you afford a small wall-hung TV? Why not look at Oprah while ironing?

A small sink cabinet will come in handy for removing those tough stains. Not a necessity, but could be convenient from time to time. There should be a few pull-out drawers for detergents and heavy items that you don't want to be lifting into the wall hung cabinets. A few trays will help you to organize your clean clothes (socks, underwear, etc) - things that don't get hung on hangers.

If space allows, include one tall cabinet. This tower can house a few helpful items. In addition to more storage shelving, you can have a swing-out hanging rack behind the upper door. In the event that you don't have space for the counter top, you could include a flip-up (or pull-out) work table in your laundry room cabinets.

Other options exist as well. You can find magnetic garment hanging racks which attach directly to your washing machine. These will hold up to 10 garments easily.

The average person spends six hours a week doing laundry. That's the equivalent of 13 days straight of nothing but laundry! No wonder there is a trend towards upgrading laundry spaces.

While upstairs laundry is becoming the standard, many people still have to trudge down to the basement to get the job done. But you can make laundry more enjoyable (or at least less dreary) if you set up the room respecting both form and function.

Let's first address the function part of the equation. What activities do you need to accomplish in this space? In what order are these tasks completed? Here is a list to get your brain started:

Transporting laundry Sorting laundry Pre-treating laundry Folding and hanging laundry Ironing laundry (yes, some people still do this!) Hand washing (and air drying) delicates Sewing and craft activities Gift-wrapping station Storing laundry supplies Now that you know what needs to be accomplished in this space, think about form. After all, the laundry room is a space where you can really get creative! While lively décor may not necessarily make laundry fun to do, it will make the time seem to go by faster. And you'll be surprised at how little it costs!

Clean up! Before you get started, create a clean canvas. Clutter - if you've got it, you need to purge it. Next, clean it as if your Mom is coming for a visit and will sleep in the basement. If your basement is still in its original form, consider painting the walls and floor with a light, neutral color. Keep items off the floor as much as possible. Chutes and Ladders! Consider adding a laundry chute to help with laundry transportation (albeit one way!). This is especially helpful if there are those (and they know who they are) who don't get their "dirties" where they belong on a regular basis. Define the laundry space. Is your laundry area floating in the middle of the room, or tucked into a corner? Set some boundaries. Add colorful FLOR interlocking carpet tiles to define your laundry space. You can make it just the size you need, and in whatever colors you want. Not only is a great design element, but it's softer on your feet. A place for everything, and everything its place. Create a movable cabinet with built-in storage by adding casters to the bottom of a vanity cabinet. Use this movable space divider to help define your space in an otherwise expansive room. Check irregulars or discontinued items at your local DIY store to get a good deal. Sort it out. Buy three large laundry baskets for sorting your laundry in light, medium or dark. Make decorative signs to indicate which is which. Or just write on them with a sharpie - whatever gets the job done! Know when to fold 'em! Pick up a discontinued kitchen island at a great price and use it as a folding table. Not only will it be a more comfortable height for your back, you'll also score additional storage underneath! And why not add a couple bar stools for doing crafts or just hanging out? Mini-fridge optional. Hang out. Hang a pole over or near the "folding island" to hang items as you fold, or get a rolling garment rack. If you hang shirts while they're still slightly damp, you'll have a much easier time ironing them. Use hanging dividers to separate clothes by owner to keep items organized. Bright Ideas. Don't skimp on lighting. Use a combination of ceiling and task lighting to make sure you can see what you are doing. If you have windows in the basement, clean them up and dress them up with light curtains that let the natural light in. Make it fun! Add a whimsical element such as a colorful sign that says "Drop Your Dirties Here" with an arrow pointing down to the laundry sorting area. Find clever cabinet knobs with a laundry theme. Add a tip jar for loose change found in the wash. Use colorful containers to hold supplies. You can find many inexpensive plastic bins at dollar stores. Use your imagination! But avoid small chatchke items that collect dust (and spiders). Think Green. Add an indoor tree to add life to the space. Perhaps a nice, durable rubber tree or faux ficus. Still not excited about laundry? Add a stereo or TV to help pass the time. Chaka Khan's "I'm every woman" just might do the trick!

Organizing Tips to Help You Conquer the Laundry Monster

Laundry. You sort, you wash, you fold, you blink - and the pile of dirty clothes has grown all over again. Laundry is a fact of life, but approaching the task in an organized way can make it more manageable.

Preparation is Half the Battle
If you have a large family (or lots of clothes!), sorting the laundry can be a daunting task all on its own. Sorting as you go not only ends the need for this part of the project, but also may encourage you to do laundry more often because it's all sorted and ready to go! Use a multi-compartmented hamper or several laundry baskets and as you throw in your dirty clothes just drop them in the appropriate section (even kids as young as pre-schoolers can learn to do this -- make it fun for them, give them a small reward (an extra 15 minutes of TV? staying up 10 minutes later?) each time they get everything in the right spot!)

Toss items that need dry cleaning into a special basket or bag as soon as you take it off. This way, when you are ready to go to the cleaners you can just grab them, rather than having to hunt for them in all the dirty laundry (ugh!)

Make a habit of always keeping a spare of laundry detergent, dryer sheets and whatever else you use regularly. That way you never have to drop everything and run to the store to complete your laundry (or use that as a reason to not complete the laundry...)

Put Away the Clean Clothes in a Flash!
Keep hangers and a folding hanging rack near the dryer. Save steps by putting hanging items directly on hangers rather than folding and toting them first. As you fold clean laundry, place items in baskets by person to simplify the process of putting it all away. Get everyone in on the act. Even small children can help put away some of their own clothes -- socks, underwear, etc. Older kids can put it all away. If you share the burden, it's not so overwhelming.

We know it's hard, but go through your drawers and closets and purge things that are never worn. Putting laundry away is much faster and more pleasant if you don't have to struggle to cram the clothes into an overstuffed space.

Set a side a small drawer or basket for socks that have lost their mate in the wash. Sooner or later the other sock will turn up and the pair can be put away with all the others.

Other Laundry Tips
Consider sprucing up and organizing the laundry area. A clean and well-organized space makes any task more enjoyable. Schedule set laundry days and stick to them. It's amazing how much more you can get done when you have a schedule.

Short of inventing disposable clothes, laundry is here to stay, but these tips should make it quicker and a little more manageable and you will never have a morning with nothing to wear.
